The Legend of the Bloody Lip: Nolan Ryan’s Toughest Moment Is Now a Must-Have Jersey
Now that the Super Bowl is officially done and that football season is over with, it's time for my favorite time of the year: Baseball season!
To me, baseball still is America's Pastime. There's just something magical about the sights, sounds, and smells at the ballpark. The baseball community is pretty awesome - ranging from helping each other to light trash talking a rival while paying for their beer in-line at concessions. Baseball is just magical. They've made numerous movies about it - from "Field of Dreams" to "Bull Durham" to "Major League". Baseball is just special.
And as always in this wonderful game, a new year brings new hope. And, if you're a Texas Rangers fan, there's lots to be excited about.
LIST: BEST RANGERS TO NEVER MAKE AN ALL-STAR TEAM
The Texas Rangers Have What Is Quite Possibly The Greatest Stadium Giveaway Ever
Full disclosure here - I am not a Rangers fan. I grew up in Baltimore and am a die hard Orioles fan. But, between the two teams, there's been lots of crossover: from Raphael Palmeiro to Vlad Guerrero. So, I've always appreciated the organization, even if I was a little miffed they eliminated the O's from the playoffs a couple years back on their way to winning a World Series.
I say all that to say this - I don't always love the Rangers, but I like and have an appreciation for them. They had a good off-season, and the pre-season projections are showing them improving their win total over 2025 with 50% chance to make the playoffs. So lots of good stuff to celebrate.
On top off all that, the Rangers just announced the coolest stadium giveaway I've ever seen. Stadium giveaways have existed forever and can literally be anything - I've seen teams give away jerseys, beer coolers, hats, BBQ sets, hot sauces...pretty much anything you can imagine.
But this giveaway the Rangers announced not only celebrates a legend and iconic moment in the game, it represents the game itself and what it means to millions of people - heart, toughness, facing adversity head-on, never backing down from a challenge, giving it your all no matter what.
After all this building up, you're probably wondering "What the hell are they giving away?" They're giving away a "Nolan Ryan Bloody Lip Jersey".
The Significance of "Bloody" Nolan Ryan to Baseball
I think people that aren't necessarily Rangers fans can point to two iconic Rangers moments featuring Nolan Ryan - Nolan beating the crap out of Robin Ventura and Nolan bleeding profusely after taking a hot-shot bouncer off the face from Bo Jackson.
As much as the fight is talked about, the bloody photo of Nolan's blood smeared jersey and him licking his busted lip is just iconic. You search "Autographed Nolan Ryan Photos", half of what shows up is THAT picture.
I think it's so iconic and memorable because he didn't just finish the play - which he did. He didn't just finish the inning - he did. He got stitched up between innings and finished the game. As George Brett said about the moment "If you thought he was intimidating before, go out and face him while he's covered in blood. THAT's intimidating".
That moment and pic means a lot of things to a lot of different people. Bert Bean, the CEO of Insight Global, keeps that photo in his office because "You're gonna get punched in the face. You're gonna be bloodied, and you're gonna be bruised. And sorry, nobody cares. You gotta pick up the ball, get back on the mound and just keep going."
Personally, I think it personifies selflessness. Nolan could have made it about it him in that moment. Instead, he just cleaned himself off the best he could and got back to work because his team needed him. Whatever the reason, the moment is iconic and the Rangers have chosen to celebrate it in the coolest way possible.
I know after the announcement, I'm buying my tickets to see the Rangers & Royals on May 29th. Wanna join me and thousands of new friends? You check out the schedule and buy tickets here.
