(Mix 93-1) Before you light that fuse on those fireworks this Fourth of July, think about this special group of people.

While most of us will be gathering with family and friends to grill burgers and dogs, turn up the playlist, and enjoy the afternoon before a night full of fireworks, not everyone will be looking forward to the noise.

Sure, we remind you to keep an eye on your pets during fireworks season, especially dogs. Some dogs really freak out with all the booming sounds and tend to jump fences and run away in fear. There’s a group of people we don’t often think enough about: military veterans.

The Forgotten Impact of Fireworks

Many military veterans are affected by the loud concussions that fireworks produce. A co-worker here at the station recently reminded me of this, and it hit home.

What sounds like a fun celebration to us can feel like a flashback to a battlefield for them, potentially retraumatizing them.

Respecting Those Who Served

So, before you put on your amateur pyrotechnics hat and show off with your full-on backyard fireworks show, check in with your neighbors. If you know someone nearby is a veteran, consider giving them a heads up or even inviting them over if they're comfortable with that.
