Is your television secretly spying on you? Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton believes that is the case with at least five major manufacturers of televisions. And on Monday, the State of Texas filed a lawsuit against the five, accusing them of spying on the people of Texas.

Texas Accuses TV Makers Of Spying on Texans

According to a press release from the Texas Attorney General's office, the Attorney General is accusing Sony, Samsung, LG, Hisense, and TCL of unlawfully collecting personal data and information through "content recognition technology"  also known as ACR technology built inside the television. The Attorney General's office says that data is being sold to other companies for advertising purposes.

“Companies, especially those connected to the Chinese Communist Party, have no business illegally recording Americans’ devices inside their own homes,” said Attorney General Paxton. “This conduct is invasive, deceptive, and unlawful. The fundamental right to privacy will be protected in Texas because owning a television does not mean surrendering your personal information to Big Tech or foreign adversaries.”

According to the press release, ACR technology can capture screen shots of a television's display and transmit that information back to the company.
