
40 Once-Popular Chain Stores Most of Us Lost in 2025
From retail to restaurants, 2025 wasn't exactly kind to several notable chains spread throughout the U.S.
Some chains closed down for good. Party City went away in February. Arts and crafts store Joann followed shortly after. Mall clothing retailer Forever 21 started winding down operations in all of its U.S. stores while going digital-only.

Others, like Advance Auto Parts and Dollar General, were both closing and opening locations as they looked for fresh approaches to win back customers. Unfortunately, the closings far outnumber the openings.
As the year entered its final quarter, multiple chains announced store closing plans that will stretch into 2026 and beyond. In October, both Carter's and REI revealed plans to shutter locations in the next two years.
