On November 19, Smith-Brearey pleaded guilty to murder charges and was sentenced to the maximum punishment of 50 years as part of a plea agreement on February 13. Over 15 witnesses were called to testify in this case, according to authorities. Martin Davis, the victim, had his family present in the courtroom for Smith-Brearey's plea and sentencing.

On March 26, 2023, police officers responded to a shooting on Waco Street in Gatesville, where they found Martin Davis unresponsive in his driveway. Davis had been shot in the left side of his chest, and security footage from Davis's home showed three suspects at the scene, one of whom was identified as Smith-Brearey walking toward Davis's house.
