The Surprising Reason Cameron Park Zoo Will No Longer House Elephants
When I was a child, heading to Waco to the Cameron Park Zoo was my favorite place to visit, and the elephants. There was just something special about them to me. I loved seeing them up close and personal; they were absolutely beautiful and had such a calm, powerful presence. Every trip to the zoo felt incomplete without stopping by to watch them.

Why Is The Cameron Park Zoo Canceling The Elephant Program?
So when KWTX reported that the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas, would be discontinuing its elephant program, I was truly heartbroken, just like so many other Central Texans. What many people may not realize is that about six months ago, Tmoe, one of the elephants living at the zoo, passed away in December. After that loss, Brendan Wiley, the zoo’s director, explained that the decision was less an active choice and more a result of modern conservation standards and evolving animal-welfare research. He shared that the move was, in many ways, made for them rather than being something they intentionally sought out.
Safety For The Elephants Is First!
Even though elephants are typically one of the most popular attractions at any zoo, replacing such a majestic animal is not simple. Wiley also spoke about international treaties and laws established decades ago to curb the ivory trade, emphasizing that strong protections are necessary. As difficult as it is to see the elephant program come to an end, I believe what matters most is ensuring these incredible animals remain safe and protected for generations to come.
