What Americans Say Their New Year’s Eve Plans Are
Get the noise makers, put the champagne on ice and get your grapes ready because for new year's eve it look like we're all ready to... go to bed.
If that sounds a little too real, you’re not alone. A mix of recent polls and surveys all point to the same trend: New Year’s Eve isn’t about going big anymore. It’s about going comfortable.
Nearly Half of Americans Aren’t Making It to Midnight
If staying up until midnight feels optional these days, that’s because it is. One poll found that 44% of Americans say they’ll be asleep before the clock hits midnight on New Year’s Eve.
This year doesn’t help. New Year’s falls in the middle of the week, and plenty of people would rather wake up functional than force themselves through a late night. And if you live out west, there’s always the option to watch the New York ball drop and still be in bed ridiculously early.
The Most Popular New Year’s Eve Plan Is Staying In
When Americans were asked how they actually want to spend New Year’s Eve, the top answer wasn’t parties, bars, or fancy plans.
Binge-watching Netflix or another streaming service took the top spot, with 35% saying that’s their ideal way to ring in the new year. Meanwhile, just 24% said they’d rather go to a big New Year’s Eve party.
The rest of the votes went to getting some sleep, scrolling on social media, or choosing something else entirely. Add it all up, and nearly half of Americans prefer a screen over a crowd on New Year’s Eve.
And with the finale to Stranger Things debuting on new year’s eve, I have to count myself in those numbers!

The New New Year’s Eve Energy
Put all these stats together, and one thing is clear: New Year’s Eve has officially entered its cozy era.
Some people will still go out. Some will make it to midnight. Others will be asleep before the countdown even starts- and wake up the next morning ordering pizza without a single regret. I used to be one of those people!
However you’re celebrating, it turns out you’re doing New Year’s Eve exactly the way most Americans are too.
