Jason Isbell Is Now an Honorary Texan
He might hail from Alabama, but Americana star Jason Isbell has been officially designated as an honorary Texan. The singer-songwriter received the honor on Sunday (July 16), while performing a sold-out concert in Austin, Texas.
According to Wide Open Country, during the third of three straight sold-out concerts in Austin, Texas Music Office head Brendan Anthony presented Isbell with a certificate, signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, welcoming him as an honorary Texan. Later that night, Isbell tweeted a photo of himself with the certificate, saying that it “doesn’t get much better than this."
“To all whom these presents shall come. Greetings: Know ye that Jason Isbell is hereby commissioned an Honorary Texan under the laws of the State of Texas, and emoluments appertaining to said office," the proclamation reads. "In testimony whereof, I have signed my name, and caused the Seal of the State of Texas to be affixed at the City of Austin, this, the 9th Day of June, 2017."
Isbell was raised near Muscle Shoals, Ala., but his wife, fellow musician Amanda Shires, is a born-and-raised Texan.
Isbell and his band, the 400 Unit, are currently touring in support of their newest album, The Nashville Sound. They will return to Texas later this year for tour dates near Dallas and Houston; visit JasonIsbell.com for more details.
