This year, we'll be able to celebrate Juneteenth as an official holiday and I could not be more excited. If you want to really make the day a memorable one, make plans to celebrate with us in Harker Heights, Texas on Sunday, June 19.

COME OUT AND CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH IN CENTRAL TEXAS

The godmother of Central Texas, Carolyn Brown, is once again is putting together an awesome event for the entire community to enjoy.

I'm proud to announce that this year's event will be extra special because A) admission is free and B) I'll be hosting it along with rising comedian Sharif Bishop!

We'll be at the Harker Heights E-Center, 710 Edwards Dr, from 3PM to 7PM. There'll be live entertainment, a fashion show and a hair show, games and activities for kids (along with a bounce house), and even a Black history museum to remind us all of what the day is really all about.

WHY IS JUNETEENTH SO IMPORTANT?

I feel that it is extremely important that folks come out and celebrate Juneteenth with all of us who are participating this year.

Juneteenth is so important because this holiday is considered the longest-running African-American holiday. It has been called America's Second Independence Day, and in a way, that's a very accurate nickname.

HOW DID JUNETEENTH COME ABOUT?

It started on June 19, 1865 when General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas along with 2,000 union troops to inform/remind people of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and to see to its enforcement. It was anything but smooth sailing from there, and many African-Americans found themselves in situations that were essentially a continuation of slavery, but we celebrate the day that the seeds of Black freedom and dignity were planted in the Lone Star State.

There were more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas when Gen. Granger arrived, and the celebrations began with them. That means that some of your ancestors may have been among the first Black people to celebrate Juneteenth, and we can keep that tradition alive at the Harker Heights E-Center on June 19. Come join us!
