You would think living in Killeen, Texas you wouldn’t be able to find decent Italian food, but you also have to keep in mind that we are next to the largest Army base in the United States, which brings all types of people to be stationed right here in Central Texas. Some of them bring recipes!

I think a lot of times people overlook our great local food joints. Don’t get me wrong: I love a good slice of pizza from Papa John’s or Domino's, but we’re talking about someone whose roots and culture are all about great Italian culinary meals.

I searched high and low all through Killeen to find where is the best place to get an authentic slice of pizza, and here are the top three shops that will not disappoint you.

Keep in mind that these are not ranked in any particular order. These are just great places with S-tier slices of pizza.

LA GONDOLA - 515 W VETERANS MEMORIAL BLVD

Let's start with La Gondola at 515 West Veterans Memorial Blvd. To tell the truth, I wasn't sure what to expect from La Gondola when I first tried it, but from bite one I could tell I was in for a treat.

The chef takes pride in not only how the food's prepared, but how it's presented as well, and that’s always important in my eyes. If you ever get a chance to try a slice of pizza from this local establishment, I would suggest the Prosciutto Crudo.  With their unique tomato sauce, prosciutto, and fresh mozzarella, you can’t go wrong!

JOE'S PIZZA AND PASTA - 408 N.FORT HOOD ST

Besides Little Italy, Joe’s Pizza and Pasta was one of the only authentic Italian restaurants that we had in Killeen for a very long time. I will always recommend Joe’s place. The food is always 10 out of 10, and the pizza is always 1 million out of 1 million.

This family-owned restaurant takes its time preparing each slice of pizza, the dough is always so crispy, and the toppings are perfectly savory. Joe’s Pizza and Pasta is located at 408 N. Fort Hood St., and I would suggest trying their Margherita pizza. Fresh sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, fresh basil, and olive oil. That may sound like too ofew ingredients, but that's the point. This pizza does more with less, and the flavor packs a wallop.

NEW YORK PIZZA - 701 W ELMS RD SUITE 300

Last but not least, New York Pizza in Killeen is by far some of the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life! What I really like about this establishment is the pizza definitely gives you a sense of New York authenticity. It’s the long triangle thin-crust pizza bursting with flavor in every bite.

My go-to for New York pizza is definitely vegetarian pizza. In my opinion, if you can make a vegetarian pizza taste great, you can make literally any sort of pizza absolutely delicious. That’s exactly what New York Pizza has done. New York pizza is located at 701 West Elms Road Suite 300. This establishment will leave you full, but ready to come right back.
