When Estate Sale Bargains Are Explosive: Austin Resident Finds 6 Live Grenades
Most estate sale shoppers hope to drive away with a vintage mid-century coffee table, a retro denim jacket, or maybe an underrated piece of cast iron. One lucky buyer in Austin, Texas, got a little more bang for their buck this week, quite literally.
Unexpected Estate Sale Discovery Prompts Emergency Response in Austin
What began as a routine estate sale purchase quickly turned into a high-stakes safety operation after a local resident made a chilling discovery inside a box of recently acquired items: half a dozen World War 2 grenades. Officers with the Austin Police Department rushed to the scene to establish a safety perimeter, isolate the area, and protect nearby residents while awaiting units that deal with explosives.
X-Ray Scans Confirm Vintage Explosives Remained Active
Members of the department's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit arrived on site to evaluate the six World War II-era devices. To safely gauge the threat, technicians performed on-site X-ray analysis. According to the Public Information Officer for the Austin Police Department, "Based on their interpretation of the X-ray images, the grenades appeared to be live and were treated accordingly."
This Isn't the First Time Grenades Have Turned Up
Similar incidents occur periodically across the country. Just last year, workers at a Goodwill donation center in Palatka, Florida discovered a live grenade inside an incoming donation box. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad had to be called in to remove the device and safely detonate it before it ever reached the sales floor.
Safety Protocol for Antique Military Items
Law enforcement agencies strongly advise you never to handle suspected military items, regardless of how old or inactive they might look.
Do Not Touch or Transport: Avoid disturbing vintage grenades, artillery shells, or mortar rounds, as age can make the fuse mechanisms extremely volatile.
Isolate the Area: Keep others at a safe distance from the object.
Call Emergency Services Immediately: Dial 911 so trained explosive disposal specialists can inspect and neutralize the item on site.
