Turning Highway 190 into Interstate 14 could bring about an economic boom according to some local city officials.

Officials with Killeen, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights and Nolanville would like to see Highway 190 designated an interstate highway in order to attract corporations that will only build near interstate highways. They say Highway 190 is already suitable for truck transport, but that it is often automatically dismissed by corporations looking to build because it is not an interstate.

If the road is given a duel designation (Interstate 14/Highway 190), officials say it will only be a matter of putting up new signs. I-14 would mean improved options for funding and economic opportunities according to a spokesperson with the Copperas Cove Economic Development Corporation.

With the support of local cities, a proposed measure would be sent to lawmakers in Austin and Washington for approval, after which it will be submitted to the Texas Department of Transportation.
