
Remembering The Victims Of The 1991 Killeen Tragedy At Luby’s Cafeteria
October 16th is unfortunate anniversary of a situation in Killeen, Texas that many in the area will never forgot. It resulted in the loss of 23 lives, with many also harmed. The situation was known as the Luby's Massacre.
What Happened On October 16th, 1991, at a Luby's Cafeteria In Killeen, Texas
According to Crime Magazine, the Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas was serving patrons in the establishment on the day. At the time, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, the restaurant was abnormally busy, and the total number of individuals inside the business was 150. This was a combined number of both workers and customers.

At the time of 12:39 PM, the perpetrator, George Hennard, drove his vehicle into the place of business. Per Crime Magazine, after Hennard's vehicle went through the front of it, some people believed that it was driver's error from Hennard that led to his crash.

However, when people went to check on Hennard's condition, Hennard got out from his car, and stated by yelling: “This is what Bell County did to me! This is payback day!” After Hennard fired from his weapons multiple times, which included taking many lives and hurting many others plus a shootout with law enforcement, Hennard was hit by an officer's fire, and locked in himself a restroom.
Thirteen minutes later, at 12:52 PM, Hennard took his own life after trying to avoid police arresting him for his actions.
How Those In Killeen Remember The Day Of October 16th, 1991
Many in Killeen still remember those who lost on that tragic day. A memorial of those who lives were taken stands at the Killeen Community Center. A school in the Killeen Area also holds a significant name upon it.
Pat Carney Elementary School, as revealed by FOX 44, is named after one of the victims. Patricia Brann Kemp Carney was involved in the Killeen Independent School District for 27 years. Her life was sadly taken in the shooting. The school opened in August of 2021.
