The History of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The Roaring Twenties were very good to American businesses, and according to History.com,  Macy’s Department Store saw its flagship store expand in 1924 from Broadway to Seventh Avenue along 34th Street encompassing one million square feet of retail space. This is where the much-loved Christmas movie Miracle on 34th Street derived its name.To celebrate the grand opening of the “World’s Largest Store”, Macy’s held a parade in New York on Thanksgiving morning. It was Macy’s hope that a parade featuring Santa Claus would prime New Yorkers for the Christmas shopping season.
