Make America Healthy Again
It is pronounced “MAH-HA”, short for Make America Healthy Again. According to the Department of Health and Human Services website, the goal of MAHA is to “reform America’s food, health, and scientific systems to identify the root causes of the chronic disease epidemic and Make America Healthy Again.”
Texas Legislation
On Wednesday, Governor Abbott signed Texas' Make America Healthy Again legislation alongside U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. at the state capitol.
The Three Bills
Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 25, Senate Bill 314 and Senate Bill 379 into law, saying, "Every legislator in Texas wants to see Texas be put on a pathway to be healthier. These bills that I am signing today put Texas on that pathway. Taxpayer dollars will no longer be used to fund chronic health problems in our state. These bills were truly a bipartisan effort, and I am proud to sign them into effect."
Senate Bill 25
Senate Bill 25, also known as the 'Make Texas Healthy Again' Act, seeks to educate Texans about healthy living. The measure will require nutrition education across k-12 schools, higher education, and the healthcare workforce. The legislation will also ensure that Texans are aware of what they are eating by requiring stronger food label transparency.
Senate Bill 314
Senate Bill 314 will eliminate certain additives in school breakfasts and lunches that are included in free or reduced-price meals.
Senate Bill 379
Senate Bill 379 will no longer allow SNAP Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) in the purchase of sugary drinks and candy.
