Maren Morris: Best New Artist Grammys Nom Is ‘Very Overwhelming’
Maren Morris will undoubtedly have a big night at the upcoming 2017 Grammy Awards: The singer -- who will perform during the ceremony with her recent CMT Crossroads partner, Alicia Keys -- is nominated for four awards, including in the all-genre Best New Artist category. It's an impressive feat, especially considering that Morris' debut album, Hero, was only released in June.
"It’s very overwhelming to be in an all-genre category with artists I really admire, and have listened to their records this year and been really inspired," Morris, who is the most-nominated country artist at the 2017 Grammys, tells The Boot. "I’m really honored to be in that category, and to be representing country and be representing Nashville in that way, in that genre."
In addition to Best New Artist, Morris is also nominated for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance, both for her debut single, "My Church." However, she says that it's the Best Country Album nomination, for Hero, that means the most to her.
"I’m in that category with a lot of heavyweights, and it’s a body of work being represented and voted on, so I feel really honored to be in that category," Morris says. "I don’t agree with the consensus that people don’t listen to records anymore; I think they’re listening to records more now than ever. It shows that people still listen to full bodies of work, which is nice, so I’m excited to be nominated in that category."
Morris is dating singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd, but she'll be taking someone else to Sunday's (Feb. 12) Grammy Awards ceremony: her mother.
"She, I think, called the shots on the Grammy date situation a long time ago," Morris admits, "so she’s got first dibs."
The 59th annual Grammy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on Feb. 12. The Late Late Show host James Corden will host the televised ceremony, which will begin at 8PM ET on CBS; the pre-telecast Premiere Ceremony will begin at 3:30PM ET and be available to stream online.
