Woman Fined for Really Gigantic Amount of Forbidden Bologna
Illegal narcotics are not the only things that the U.S. Border Patrol is on the lookout for being transported across U.S. and Mexico border, and one lady found this out the hard way. A 43 year-old U.S. citizen drove through an inspection at a port of entry in the border city or Presidio, Texas where she was found to be in possession of a little more than just the one cooked meal that she claimed.
Border agents ended up confiscating almost 750 lbs. of bologna, 280 boxes of prescription medications, and over $7,500 dollars. That's about $15,000 lbs. worth of bologna, which is about one month's supply at my house.
The border patrol agents thought the woman might be lying about only having the one cooked meal in her possession since she had some pretty large and heavy suitcases in her possession as well. Upon opening the first suitcase they discovered quite a few rolls of Mexican bologna. They also found prescription medication hidden inside the compartments of the GMC Yukon that the woman was driving.
The bologna, the medication, and the money were all seized, and the woman was fined $1,000 for not declaring the items. All of the Mexican bologna was destroyed, and that seems to be the worst crime committed throughout this whole ordeal.
Though it may seem harmless to bring something as benign as bologna across the border, the border patrol agents state that it is prohibited because it has the potential to introduce foreign animal diseases to the U.S. pork Industry.
If you are going to travel internationally then it would be a good idea to educate yourself on prohibited and restricted items. You can see a list of those items here.
