One of America’s Most Haunted Cities Is in Texas
With its bloody history, it's not a surprise that this Texas town has earned a place on the list for top 10 cities in the country with paranormal reputations.
San Antonio, Texas is not only considered one of the most haunted places in the state, Travel and Leisure has named it one of the 10 most haunted cities in America.
Ghosts of the Alamo
Originally built as the Mission San Antonio de Valero, it has become one of the most popular historic sites in the United States, according to history site Legends of America.
All 189 Texan defenders at the Battle of the Alamo were killed, and around 1,600 Mexican soldiers died in the Battle of the Alamo as well. Visitors to the Alamo and those working at the site have shared stories about seeing images of ghost soldiers, along with hearing terrifying sounds of battle cries and explosions.
What many people may not realize is that before the Battle of the Alamo, the mission itself and the surrounding area was a cemetery. Between the years of 1724 and 1793, it's estimated that about a thousand people were buried on the ground that currently makes up Alamo Plaza.
By the late 1800's, stories of supernatural activity in the area had become legendary. Even today, Legends of America states that construction and utility employees often turn up skulls and other bones when working in the area.
Haunted San Antonio
A spirit-filled battleground isn't the only place to find ghosts in San Antonio, either. The Emily Morgan Hotel is not only one of the city's most haunted places, but also one of the country's most haunted hotels as well.
Before it became a hotel, the property served as a hospital. According to Travel and Leisure, one of the most commonly reported apparition at the Emily Morgan Hotel is a woman dressed in white, floating down the hallways. If you want to check things out for yourself, a special 'Halloween Package' is offered at the hotel through the end of October that includes a spooky gift.
In fact, there's no shortage of spirited places to stay while in the city. San Antonio Ghost Tours has nine different haunted hotels listed on their website that are rumored to contain supernatural activity.
