Last year the Environment Texas Reseach and Policy Center took samples from 167 Texas beaches to analyze bacteria count. 141 of those beaches were found 'unsafe' to swim on at least one of the sampling days.

The high bacteria count mainly comes from sewage overflow. Something that must be managed much better. Swimming in contaminated water can lead to a number of illnesses, with millions reported each year.

Again, these beaches were not considered hazardous every day or even the majority of the time. So don't think you must cancel your trip to the beach. A great resource to see up to date bacteria water levels is TexasBeachWatch.com, it's super easy to use.

So go out enjoy an end of the summer trip before the kids go back to school, just be aware and stay safe.
