Police Officer in Hewitt Shot While Responding to Bank Robbery
A Hewitt police officer who was responding to a bank robbery was shot Tuesday morning after arriving at the Pointwest Bank at 420 North Hewitt Drive.
The bank robbery and shooting led to a car chase that ended near University High School in Waco. The officer's name has not yet been released but is listed in stable condition. The officer returned fire at the time of the shooting.
KWTX News 10 reports that the bank robber was armed with a shotgun. The officer was taken to Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest in Waco. The photo below shows how the car chase ended with the robber crashing his truck near Garden Drive and Wingate Drive near the high school.
The robber fled the crash on foot but police managed to catch them. Midway ISD schools near the scene of the bank robbery were locked down for a time because of the gunfire. University High School and Alta Vista Elementary were placed on soft lockdown.
Police are searching both sides of High way 77 near Cloverleaf and Darden for the weapon used during the holdup. The bank is surrounded with crime tape as officers investigate.
