An organization that gives people a second chance at life is being celebrated this week in Bell County.

National Salvation Army Week in Bell County

From May 11 through May 16, Bell County residents are coming together to celebrate National Salvation Army Week. The Christian organization’s motto is “Heart to God, Hand to Man” and it perfectly describes what they do for those in need.

A Lifeline for Those in Need

By offering a safety net for those in the middle of a personal crises, providing nutritious meals to the hungry, and ensuring the homeless have a secure place to sleep, the Salvation Army continues to be a vital lifeline for our neighbors. Today, that mission has expanded globally, with operations reaching across 134 different nations.

A Presidential Foundation

The roots of this commemorative week trace back to 1954, when the United States Congress established a period of recognition originally scheduled for late autumn. According to Fox 44President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially inaugurated the event, urging Americans to remember the importance of selfless service. Eisenhower praised the organization as a premier example of human brotherhood, in that its dedication offers a constant reminder that every American is family.

The Power of "Giving With Joy"

This year’s national theme is "Give With Joy."The philosophy is simple: acts of kindness do more than just satisfy a physical requirement; they restore dignity and provide the certainty that no member of our community is overlooked. Joyful generosity creates a ripple effect that can fundamentally alter the direction of a person's life.

Celebration Weekend

Bell County residents are invited to take part in the festivities this Saturday. A drive-thru food collection will benefit the Community Food Pantry from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion Post 133 parking lot (located at 25th Street and Avenue M in Temple). Anyone donating ten unopened, nonperishable food items will be thanked with a complimentary BBQ lunch.

Honoring Heroes

In recognition of Armed Forces Day, all veterans and active-duty military members eat for free with a valid ID. To contribute to these efforts or learn more about local programs, contact the Bell County office at 254-774-9996 or visit the headquarters at 419 West Avenue G in Temple.
