Starbucks Plans to Ditch Plastic Straws

Our addiction to single-use plastic is taking a toll on our oceans, and a few companies are taking measures to reduce their impact. The latest to announce a big change is Starbucks, which will soon begin phasing out plastic straws.

The company plans to roll out strawless lids, with a goal of eliminating the need for plastic straws in less than two years. The new cups for cold drinks featured a raised lip for sipping.

Personally, I like the design.

Here's what bugs me.

The lid is still made of plastic. In fact, it looks like a thicker plastic, and it seems to have more surface volume than the average straw. Granted, the lid is made of material that can be recycled, unlike the old straws, but how many people will take the time to recycle the lids?

I hope they will, and that the effort to reduce our plastic dumping into the ocean continues to evolve and innovate. No matter your political leanings, I think we can all agree that we should be good stewards of the earth.
