Security Heightened at Temple City Council Meetings Following Reported Threat

Municipal meetings in Temple will see an increased law enforcement presence following a reported death threat directed at city council members. According to KXXV, the threat followed intense community pushback against tech companies trying to build data centers in Bell County.

Threat Resulted in An Arrest

The threat made against city council members was followed by an arrest almost a month ago. Even so, Temple Mayor Tim Davis says extra security is needed. According to KXXV, Mayor Davis acknowledged that while the statistical likelihood of actual violence is minimal, he said the city must remain vigilant because it only takes one incident to disrupt public safety.

Balancing Public Discourse and Safety

According to council member Nohely Mackowiak, the extra officers will be on hand to monitor audience behavior. She emphasized that while the council has not yet exercised its legal right to eject any attendees from the chambers, security personnel and leadership maintain the authority to remove people who become unruly.

Locals Say Extra Security Is Not Needed

Community members are not happy with the message being sent by the council. Sarah Royer, with the group Stop Temple Data Centers, tells KXXV that the death threat against council members was made by someone who is not a Temple resident. She said an outside agitator should not be used to draw attention away from the localized opposition. The group says that the unvetted introduction of 11 data centers poses an unprecedented threat to the health, finances, and overall quality of life of local neighborhoods.

Looking Ahead

The data center issue isn’t going anywhere anytime soon; Mayor Davis is urging Bell County residents to do their own due diligence and research data center operations. While many residents disagree, Davis says the council has conducted comprehensive research. The mayor says the council is focused on both the money that can be made from the data centers and the safety issues that accompany them.
