Texans Using This Magic Plant is Actually Risky and Offensive
Psychedelics play a big part in many different cultures. Many of the native tribes, some right here in Texas, use them for spiritual purposes, the Vikings would eat psilocybin mushrooms before going on raids, and hippies will do them so that they can convince themselves that jam bands like Phish and the Grateful Dead are good.
These days the use of psychedelics for spiritual awakening and self-treatment of addiction, depression, and other psychological disorders has crossed over into the mainstream of western society. There are, however, some that wish people who are not members of Native American tribes would leave at least one of the sacred plants alone.
Peyote produces mescaline which is the psychoactive compound of the plant. It can only be found in the southwestern United States and Northern Mexico, and it grows quite slowly. The Native American Church (NAC) has used Peyote legally in ceremonies that involve prayer, song, and self-reflection. Unfortunately, the plant is at rick due to overharvesting, land development, and the number of westerners seeking out the spiritual experience.
It's not just about the plant, though. The NAC views the plant and the experience as a very important part of their culture, and the less informed audience wanting to experience the effects could take away the credibility of the religious ceremonies of the Indigenous people.
There are some truly beneficial reasons to seek therapy using psychedelics, but it is important to approach them with respect and thoughtfulness. One of the outcomes of the experiences is self-reflection and an introspective look at one's own ego, but ironically, this is being accomplished in a very selfish way.
