Yikes! Texas Is One Of The Top States For Bug Friendly Areas

Across the country, insects are increasing due to weather conditions. Two cities in the Lone Star State are the top most pest-infested areas in the country, and Texas is one of the most bug friendly states in the nation.

Specifically, Dallas and Houston made the top 5 list of American cities most at risk for an increase in cockroaches, mosquitos, and ticks.

The Problem With Unwanted Insects

Katsaridaphobia, or fear of cockroaches, is a real disorder. Horror movies use cockroaches to inspire disgust and loathing for good reason. In heavy infestations, roaches have been known to gnaw eyelashes off sleeping humans.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cockroaches can carry pathogens that cause diarrhea, plague, typhoid, and many other viral illnesses, as well as a number of allergic reactions and respiratory issues.

Signs Of Possible Infestation

If you see roach droppings (they look like coffee grounds or black pepper), you may have an infestation. Also, look for egg cases, generally found behind furniture or in other hidden areas.

If you smell a strong oily or musty odor that doesn’t go away when you clean, that can be a sign you’ve got unwanted company in the form of cockroaches.

How To Keep Bugs Out Of Your Home

Here’s three ways to avoid giving out the keys to the roach motel, as well as discouraging other pests:

• Store food in airtight containers and clean up spills as soon as they happen.
• Fix leaking pipes or slow drains, then seal gaps and cracks wherever you find them.
• Get rid of standing water – mosquitos only need a ½ inch depth to breed.
