Texas Data Centers Under Investigation For Concealing Water Usage From State Regulators
Texans have many issues with data centers, with excessive water usage topping the list. Data centers ignoring state requests to detail their water usage amounts are now under investigation.
Texas Data Centers Face Scrutiny Over Hidden Water Consumption
A state investigation into data center water usage shows the growing friction between rapid data center growth and water management across the state. According to KXAN, dozens of data centers statewide are now under investigation after refusing to comply with Texas Water Development Board reporting mandates. Harris, Travis, Dallas, Tarrant, and Bexar counties are among those feeling the heat.

How Much Water Are We Talking About?
The days of small data centers are over. Nowadays, tech giants are building expansive "hyperscale" facilities that can consume anywhere from 1 million to 5 million gallons of water daily.
Evaporative Air to Closed-Loop Systems
Data centers operate thousands of high-powered processing chips that generate huge amounts of thermal energy. To keep equipment from overheating, operators must transfer heat away from the servers, a process historically reliant on evaporative cooling that lost vast amounts of water to the atmosphere. To curb heavy water loss, the industry shifted toward closed-loop recirculating systems.
Long-Term Consequences for State Water Infrastructure
The lack of verified water usage amounts creates a blind spot for the Texas State Water Plan, which is updated every five years to project future regional supply needs and allocate infrastructure funding where it is needed. If data center consumption figures remain hidden, growing communities risk underfunding vital water treatment and supply projects.
