Texas has been reporting cases of the C. auris fungus spreading in the state since 2018, but over the last few years, the Lone Star State has gone from just a handful of cases to being among the worst states in the country for this incredibly deadly, drug resistant infection.

According to this Centers for Disease Control article, prior to 2016, the C. auris was either non existent, or had not been recognized as a new threat in the United States, but you can see the growth trend in just a few short years.

The truly scariest part about contracting an infection like C. auris is it has proven to be immune to many of the known anti-fungal treatments and sanitizers, so it can just about impossible to treat, and even has a sturdy shelf life with an ability to clean to surfaces for long periods of time.

Not only does the disease itself appear to be growing in its ability to be contracted, the origins for contracting the fungus are also increasing, which means extreme caution needs to be exercised before touching anything that's cleanliness cannot be verified. The American Journal of Infection Control has been following this fungus closely and has observed the infection can remain in the blood for months, and possibly even years, posing a perpetual risk to anyone carrying it.
