Killeen, Texas has a reputation for having a whole lot of corner car washes, and almost just about as impossible to count are all of the dollar stores across the city. In a quickly growing state like Texas, you do have to remain aware of your water usage, but having a dollar store close could possibly have a much greater affect on a community than a shuttered car wash.

I am not a financial expert, but after the most recent year end and quarterly fiscal report it appears that Dollar General is doing pretty well overall as a company, and are serving their customers well with their promise of bargain prices. Shareholders were even told to expect a quarterly dividend of almost $.60 per share.

According to this KENS 5 article, even with the positive cashflow numbers and an economy that pushed many to seek cheaper purchasing options over the last year, there were still some underperforming Dollar General stores, and failed ventures that are now going away in the next few weeks.

Yes, the question of closing about 100 stores out of nearly 20,000 having a major impact on company health can be made, but just because it is good for Dollar General, does not mean it is good for your family or mine. The closest grocery store to my house is Dollar General, and even just one closing can contribute majorly to the creation or spread of a food desert.
