Central Texas - It's summertime, and the temperature isn't the only thing on the rise in Central Texas.

Summer Surge at the Pump ⛽

Gas prices in Texas are on the upswing as the summer travel season kicks off. According to AAA, the average price for regular unleaded has reached $2.80 per gallon, with some areas nearing the $3 mark. Central Texas drivers are currently experiencing a range of $2.50 to $2.80, contingent on location and the specific gas station.

The Usual Suspects at Play

AAA attributes this increase to the familiar combination of heightened demand as Texans prepare for Memorial Day road trips and the mandatory switch to summer-grade gasoline. This cleaner-burning fuel required during warmer months incurs higher production costs for refineries, a cost that invariably translates to higher prices at the pump for consumers.

A Silver Lining in the Price Hike ☀️

Despite the unwelcome rise, there's a bit of good news for Texas drivers. Current gas prices are still approximately 40 cents lower than they were at the same time last year. This offers a degree of relief, suggesting that while filling up might feel expensive, it's not as steep as it was in 2024. This pre-summer price increase has become a common trend in Texas, particularly in May.

Looking Ahead at the Pump ️

AAA anticipates that these elevated prices will likely persist throughout the Memorial Day holiday weekend. However, they do not foresee any significant price spikes unless unforeseen events such as supply disruptions or unexpected weather patterns occur. In the meantime, drivers are advised to actively compare prices at different stations, utilize fuel-finding apps, and be mindful of fuel consumption habits like avoiding excessive idling.
