Texas Mom Accidentally Shoots 5-Year-Old Son
A trigger happy woman shot her son while she attempted to shoot a neighborhood dog.
According to a press release from the Houston Police Department, Angelia Mia Vargas, 24, was charged with deadly conduct - discharge of firearm in the 185th State District Court after accidentally shooting her 5-year-old son.
Houston law enforcement was called to 700 Dunham Road at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Saturday (May 29) after receiving a dispatch of shots fired. When police arrived at the scene, they found Vargas' son, age 5, had been shot by a ricocheted bullet and was suffering from a non-life threatening wound in the abdomen.
A report from HuffPost states that Vargas, her husband, and her son had been riding bicycles in the street when their neighbor's 6-month-old Boxer puppy, Bruno, ran out of his home. The owner of the Boxer immediately went outside to retrieve the pup when 3 shots rant out. Vargas' neighbor owns a ring camera, and the incident was caught on video.
Vargas allegedly had fired a small caliber pistol three times in an attempt to hit Bruno. Unfortunately for Vargas, she shot her own child. Bruno was grazed in the leg, but was otherwise uninjured.
Houston Police issued a citation to Bruno's owner for having a loose dog, and Vargas was arrested and charged for the incident, as she had fired across a public roadway and in the direction of two occupied houses.
Personally, I don't understand why the woman felt the need to shoot immediately. The situation could have been handled entirely differently, where nobody's life was put in danger.
