Texas Tech University Cancels Course On Witchcraft and Black Magic

A course on witchcraft at Texas Tech University has reportedly been cancelled.
Last week it was reported that that Texas Tech University would be offering a class on the topic of Witches, Bruxas, and Black Magic. The course was listed under Women's & Gender Studies and was apparently going to be a course that would dive into the practice of witchcraft, magic, and spirituality.
On June 12, a TechAnnounce went out to students announcing the course.
WGS 4301 Special Topics: Witches, Bruxas, & Black MagicSection D02, CRN 43121This course introduces the study of beliefs and practices, past and present, associated with magic, witchcraft, spirituality, magical realism, and religion. Topics discussed include ritual, symbolism, mythology, altered states of consciousness, and healing, as well as syncretism, change, and the social roles of these beliefs and practices.Questions? Once word got out about the course, many alumni and conservative activists took to social media to protest the course and ask why taxpayer money was been used for a course that explored witchcraft and black magic. There were people who found the course interesting, but the backlash online was swift.
According to reports on Thursday, Texas Tech Regent Cody Campbell said that Texas Tech would no longer be offering the course after news of the course was met with backlash.
Texas Tech is not the only University making headlines this week for controversial classes. TCU is reportedly offering a class called 'Queer Art of Drag' which will require students to create a "drag persona" and perform in front of the class.
