Top Names Nationally

When looking at the broader United States landscape, certain names have established undeniable dominance. Nationally, Liam captured the number one slot for boys for an impressive ninth consecutive year, while Olivia maintained her status as the reigning favorite for girls for the seventh straight year.

Shifting Demographics and Record-Low Fertility

The release of these names stands in sharp contrast to broader, more depressing demographic shifts occurring across the country. According to a report from the CDC and the National Center for Health Statistics published in April 2026, overall American births are maintaining a steady downward trajectory.

A Look at the Numbers

The nation recorded 3,606,400 births over the course of the year, marking a 1% dip from the previous twelve-month period. This slowdown has pushed the general fertility rate to an unprecedented historical low, dropping to just 53.1 births per 1,000 women within the 15–44 age demographic.

Long-Term Declines

The latest birth numbers are part of a much larger generational trend; total annual births across the United States have plummeted by roughly 23% since hitting their historical peak in 2007. A significant driver of this shift is the teen birthrate, which experienced another sharp 7% decline, lowering to 11.7 births per 1,000 females between the ages of 15 and 19.

Boys Outnumber Girls

Despite fewer children being born overall, some things remain consistent. The data confirms that boys continue to outnumber girls slightly at birth. This natural sex ratio has held firm for decades within American statistics, balancing out at about 105 male births for every 100 female births.
