Motorists experienced flat tires and a major traffic backup this morning after a crate full of screws fell off an 18-wheeler and burst open near mile marker 314 on I-35, showering the main lanes with sharp objects.

The incident happened at about 8:45 a.m. near mile marker 314 on the southbound side of the highway

Traffic was diverted for a time while crews cleaned the screws off the roadway.

Bruceville-Eddy police officers were assisting troopers with traffic control while the roadway was being cleared.

The scene was cleared by around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, but traffic, which was backed up for almost five miles, was still moving slowly.
