There was a music festival this past weekend in Georgetown that had one of the best lineups I have ever seen. The Two Step Inn festival was well organized, stacked with massive talent, and an event enjoyed by festival goers of all ages.

️ Small Town, Big Crowd

Georgetown is not a big city. It has a population around 70k, which compared to Austin which is only 30 miles away with almost a million people, makes it more of a village than a city. For one weekend, however, the population almost doubled with nearly 60K people in attendance for the Two Step Inn festival.

Country Roots, Familiar Faces

Two Step Inn is ran by the same organization that runs the Austin City Limits festival (ACL), but the Two Step Inn is mainly country music as opposed to the more pop and hip hop focused ACL festival. This year, the artists playing at Two Step spanned multiple generations with Alan Jackson headlining the first night as part of his farewell tour to Stephen Wilson Jr who released his first solo album, Son of Dad, in 2023.

Intimate Moments & Rising Stars

There were three stages at the festival this year. Pony Up was the smallest stage, while Showdeo and Big River hosted the larger acts of the weekend. Stephen Wilson Jr performed on the Pony Up stage, and it was one of my favorite performances of the weekend. The smaller stage made for a more intimate setting, and it's clear that Wilson is absolutely loving every second of his performance.

Farewell to a Legend

Alan Jackson headlined the first night of the festival, and this was a huge event given this is Jackson's last year performing live. There were no other acts performing during his set, so everyone in attendance flocked to the Big River stage to take in the amazing performance by Alan Jackson. It is a shame that he won't be performing live again after this year, but it was amazing sharing this night with almost 30,000 other Alan Jackson fans.

️ Iconic Sounds & Enduring Legacies

On Sunday night, Lynyrd Skynyrd headlined the Showdeo stage before Sturgill Simpson closed out the weekend on the Big River stage. Skynyrd put on an iconic performance as always playing classic hits like "Saturday Night Special" and "Gimme Three Steps". With the passing of Gary Rossington in 2023, there are no surviving original members of the band. However, Johnny Van Zant has sung lead vocals for the band since 1987, ten years after his brother Ronnie passed away. Meaning that Johnny has been the frontman of the band for longer than his brother was alive.

A Genre-Bending Finale

Sturgill Simpson's performance at the end of the final night was non-stop musical thrill ride. The band comes out on stage and Sturgill greets the crowd, and then the band plays without any interruption for the next hour and a half before Sturgill says goodnight. Sturgill's catalogue consists of eight studio albums that span several different genres from country and bluegrass to rock and roll. He is one of the most talented and prolific artists performing today, and his live show was the perfect performance to end the festival on.
