University History

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has been around for quite a while, pre-dating the state of Texas. Baptist missionary work was in its infancy when the Home Mission Board of New York sent missionaries Rev. James Huckins and Rev. William M. Tryon to the Republic of Texas. Soon to follow, Judge R.E.B. Baylor, a teacher, lawyer, soldier and preacher. It was these three men and their desire to provide Christian education that led Tryon and Baylor to prepare a charter for the establishment of a Baptist university. On February 1, 1845, the 9th Congress of the Republic of Texas granted a charter, making the school a reality.
