The Austin, Texas airport is set to receive additions and upgrades, thanks to approval from the City Council. Here's what is known.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Getting Bigger And Better

Per NewsWeek, approval for the construction happened on September 26th, 2024. The City Council gave multiple contracts to Austin Commercial LP, Hensel Phelps Construction Company, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. Contracts had various amounts as well.

NewsWeek reported that an agreement for $1.03 billion went to Hensel Phelps Construction Company, $820 million to Austin Commercial LP and $45 million allotted  for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. The amounts vary due to work each company is set to do.

The Concourse B and Tunnel task falls to Hensel Phelps, while Austin Commercial LP will handle the Arrivals and Departures Hall project. What brought about these changes? None other than the growth that Central Texas has experienced.

NewsWeek reports that due to "Journey With AUS," these contracts became real. "Journey With AUS" is a program that is set to go over many years regarding expansion of the airfield. NewsWeek also revealed what else will receive updates:

- A new midfield concourse and connecting tunnel
- New arrivals and departures hall
- Midfield taxiways
- Expanded parking
- A new baggage handling system
- International arrival upgrades
- Expansion to the airport's west gate
- A new airplane fuel facility

How will the work take? The estimated date for it all to be done is 2030. So, it will certainly take some time!

New Austin Super Tower Will Be The Tallest Building in Texas by 20 Feet

Currently, the title of the tallest building in Austin goes to The Independent, and the tallest in the state is the JPMorgan Chase Tower in downtown Houston.

This new structure will better those by 300 feet and 20 feet respectively -- and bring the title of "Texas' Tallest Building" to the Capital of the Lone Star State.
