Baylor's Bear Mascots,Indy and Belle, are getting a major glow-up for their on campus house!

Major Donor Gifts Launch Transformation of Baylor's Historic Bear Habitat

Baylor University has officially broken ground on a major enhancement project at the Bill and Eva Williams Bear Habitat. This follows large donations from Baylor alumni families. The donor-funded renovation aims to improve the facility's grounds, expand educational resources for visiting school groups, and upgrade infrastructure for the university's live mascot program, which welcomes more than 250,000 visitors annually. Construction is currently underway and is anticipated to wrap up in early 2027.

Expanding Educational Outreach and On-Campus Facilities

The upgraded site will feature a newly constructed education pavilion, additional visitor seating, refreshed landscaping, and modern interactive technology. These additions are designed to bolster the university's outreach efforts, especially for the more than 5,000 elementary students and youth groups who tour the habitat each year.

Indy and Belle Bear

The campus facility currently houses Indy and Belle, two American black bears who arrived at Baylor in 2023. During the construction process, university staff will temporarily relocate Indy and Belle to their off-campus housing complex.

Honoring Century-Old Traditions with New Memorial Plaza

A prominent feature of the renovation is the addition of a dedicated memorial plaza celebrating the 109-year legacy of Baylor's live mascot tradition. The tribute will honor past university mascots, paying special homage to sisters Joy and Lady, who served as campus icons for over two decades before passing away in 2022 and 2025. Joy and Lady held historical significance as the first mascots to spend their entire natural lives under the continuous care of the university's mascot program.

Dr. Adam Ylitalo's Efforts Are Behind the Improvements

The project was sparked by Dr. Adam Ylitalo, a former student Bear Trainer and Chamber of Commerce member who cared for mascot Lady during his undergraduate years. This one-on-one experience with the program inspired his family's gift alongside the Jeff and Shelley Vosburgs' leadership contribution.

10 Photos of Bears I Saw In the Wild

I was privileged to take a trip to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park with guys that have been there before to look for bears. That experience paid huge dividends. I am nowhere close to being a professional photographer, but getting these bear shots was a huge thrill.
