Get Creative With The Library Card Design Contest In Belton
Belton has a fun project planned for National Library Card Sign-Up Month!
National Library Card Sign-Up Month is this Month and Belton is Ready!
September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and libraries are using the designation to inform the public about the important role libraries play in our lives.
The Belton Public Library Gets Creative
This September, the Belton Public Library is hosting a Library Card Design contest. They have held the contest in the past, but there will be some changes this year. For the first time ever, there will be three contest categories: Adults, Teenagers and Children. Design entrants must have a tie to reading and cannot contain copyrighted images.
The Easy Process of Obtaining a Belton Library Card
The Belton Public Library only requires a photo ID and proof of address to acquire a free library card. Contrary to belief, the card can do more than check out books. Library card holders can access online services for e-books, audio books, and movies via Kanopy as well as research databases. The library card design contest ends on September 18th. Those taking part must submit their entry in person at the library.
The Long History of the Library
The first libraries consisted of the earliest form of writing and were discovered in present-day Syria and Iraq. Mud-like clay was placed in the wooden frames, and the surface was smoothed for writing and allowed to dry until damp.
The American Library
In 1783, James Madison first proposed instituting a congressional library. Books were ordered from London and the collection, consisting of 740 books and 3 maps, was housed in the new Capitol. In 1814, British troops burned the majority of the Library of Congress. Thomas Jefferson offered his vast library to Congress as a replacement. With the addition of Jefferson’s books, the size of the library doubled within a year. Jefferson's library formed the basis of the modern Library of Congress.
