Watch As A Masai Giraffe Calf Takes Its First Steps
The Cameron Park Zoo had a major reason to celebrate at 8:15 am on July 25. An exciting thing happened: a Masai giraffe calf was born to its mother Eleanor! This is a great moment for the zoo to share with everyone who enjoys seeing new babies.
Early Signs of Health
The zoo reported that the calf is showing plenty of signs of health. By 11 am, this baby was standing without any assistance. Shortly after, staff members reported that the calf was nursing from Eleanor! These are positive signs for action of a newborn giraffe and it shows the calf is off to a great start.
Careful Monitoring
For the time being, to protect both the mother and baby, the zoo staff is monitoring both of them through a video monitoring system. Staff members are working to ensure the pair have quiet time on the first day to allow them to bond. If all goes well, staff will do their normal newborn check the following morning.
When Can Guests Visit the Baby Giraffe?
Visitors to the zoo will have to wait a little while until they are able to see the calf in person. The zoo is going to keep the calf behind the scenes for a few days to allow both calves to acclimate to their new life. More information including the gender of the calf and when it will meet guests will be provided the next week.
Having another Masai giraffe calf is news beyond the "cute" factor. Masai giraffes are an endangered species. Having each new birth is another step at protecting this species and presenting for all to learn about wildlife conservation. For now, the new baby is receiving care and rest it needs before coming to meet the community.
