Confirmed! U-Haul Says Texas is #1 Growth State of 2021
Here we grow again. U-Haul has named Texas as the #1 growth state of 2021.
According to U-Haul, Texas beat out Florida to become the state where most people rented one-way U-Haul trucks in 2021. Tennessee, South Carolina, and Arizona round out the top 5 states that saw the most growth last year.
Texas is no stranger to topping this list. The Lone Star State has landed at #1 from 2016 - 2018, and finished second in 2019 to Florida and second to Tennessee in 2020.
We've heard a lot about people leaving California and New York in droves, and it seems as though most are headed to the great state of Texas.

California finished 50th and New York landed 45th on the list, which seems to indicate more people left those states than arrived.
Matt Merrill, U-Haul Area District Vice President of the Dallas Fort-Worth Metroplex and West Texas, says:
"We see a lot of growth coming from the East and West Coast, a lot of people moving here from California (and) New York. We also see a lot of people coming in from the Chicago markets. I think that's a lot due to the job growth – a lot of opportunity here. The cost of living here is much lower than those areas. Texas is open for business."
The numbers show that arrivals of U-Haul trucks in Texas increased in 2021 by 19%. Those heading out of the state rose 18%.
According to myuhaulstory.com, College Station-Bryan, Grapevine, Austin, Richardson, Carrollton, and Conroe saw the biggest new arrivals, with Haltom City, Mesquite, New Braunfels, among others, also seeing significate growth.
What's not to love? A strong job market, lots of entertainment options including sports, music, and family friendly activities, combined with a decent cost of living and generally low gas prices is pretty tempting. All that combined with no income tax makes Texas a prime location for families and individuals alike.
Welcome to Texas, y'all. Grab yourself some Whataburger and Dr Pepper, and remember - left lane's for passing.
