Today in Country Music History: July 16th
July 16th is a big date in country music history from iconic songs to record-setting concerts to the ultimate honor in country music. Let's lookback on some major milestones that influenced country music and its history.
1984 - Alabama Tells Us Fiddles Belong in Texas
The iconic Alabama song "If You're Gonna Play in Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band)" became popular on July 16th, 1984, when Alabama released it as a single (and of course it hit #1 on the country charts). This was the 14th of 21 consecutive #1 hits for the band between 1980-1987 which is a remarkable run.
1986 - Dollywood opens its gates
Dolly Parton made history on July 16th, 1986, not only with music, but also in theme park history. That is when Dollywood open in Pigeon Forge, TN. The theme park has rides, entertainment, and music and some solid Appalachian crafts makers. Not only is it a successful entertainment experience, but it has also made an enormous economic impact with employing over 3,000 people in the area. Dollywood is an attraction that has surpassed most theme parks in the South and in the process honors Dolly's roots and folklore.
2006 - Kenny Chesney sets a stadium record
In 2006, Kenny Chesney sold out Foxboro, MA's Gillette Stadium and did an astounding $4 million on one show that year (a record at the time for a county concert). There were also some major stars opening for Kenny including Dierks Bentley, Gretchen Wilson, Big & Rich, and Carrie Underwood.
2019- Luke Combs joins the Grand Ole Opry
Luke Combs earned one of the highest honors in country music on July 16th, 2019, when he was inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Since joining, he's won multiple CMA and ACM awards, been nominated for Grammy awards, and won two CMA Entertainer of the Year awards. In my opinion, Combs has an amazing raw voice and artistic songwriting style.
Today will be another date where country music continues to make history.
