Today in Country Music History: July 17th
Happy Birthday, Luke Bryan!
Luke Bryan was born in Leesburg, Georgia, in 1976, and he has made a name for himself as one of the most successful and recognizable artists in modern country music. Prior to starting his own successful career, Luke was a songwriter for artists such as Travis Tritt and Billy Currington. He began his climb to the top of the charts in the late 2000s with the #1 hits "Rain Is a Good Thing" and "Someone Else Calling You Baby." With his smooth voice, party songs, and energetic live shows, he has since grown to be one of the biggest stars around.
Dolly Goes Global
Dolly Parton started her Better Day World Tour in 2011 at the Thompson–Boling Arena in Knoxville. The tour covered the U.S., Europe, and Australia, with 49 shows across the world. Almost 275,000 fans attended and brought in an estimated $34 million. Mrs. Parton has proven that, from her small-town Tennessee roots to the world stages, she is smiling and putting rhinestones on everything in sight.
Controversy Can't Stop the Charts
In 2023, the CMT network pulled Jason Aldean's "Try That in a Small Town" music video from rotation after backlash to the images of urban protests and violence. However, Aldean thrived on the attention, and his song continued its fast-tracked climb to the top of the charts. Love it or hate it, Aldean's tune got people talking again about how relevant and powerful country music can be in the cultural narrative.
From birthdays to blow-ups, July 17th has proven it can be anything but boring in country music.
