You Need to Know Fort Cavazos, Texas is Now Conducting Explosive Training
One of the benefits of living near a military base is getting to see first-hand some of the cool things that do on post. It can be very entertaining to see whether it's an airshow featuring the amazing capabilities of the Blue Angels or getting to see a military convoy with some of the coolest military vehicles you've ever seen driving through your hometown.
Unfortunately, one of the negative aspects of living near a military installation is the noise pollution. I was a mechanic on the CH-46E tandem rotor helicopter when I was in the Marine Corps. One of my favorite duty stations was Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Okinawa, Japan. There were constant protests to our operations there even though there were many benefits to the Island for having us there (mostly financial), and one of the largest complaints was noise pollution from all of the aircraft on the base.
The good citizens of Temple / Killeen are getting to experience some noise pollution all night and day through the end of the month. Fort Cavazos is home to a cavalry brigade, and they are currently conducting some live-fire training at the base. The director of public affairs for III Corps, Colonel Sztalkoper, made a statement to FME News saying, " We appreciate local communities and local partners supporting our ability to accomplish any mission so we can stand ready to defend our country should the moment arise." Sure, Colonel Sztalkoper, you have our complete support. It doesn't hurt that you have big rockets and missiles at your control.
Some people were concerned that the noise may have been the result of something more serious than just training, and I think that the concern was missing out on an opportunity to help blow some stuff up with the Army seeing as how we live in Texas.
