Military veterans are being encouraged to start a career in the trucking industry.

White House Proposes Veteran Trucking Shift

During a military investment address in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, President Trump announced a new push to transition military veterans into civilian trucking roles. The administration aims to create a streamlined pipeline by declaring that any American with military experience operating heavy vehicles will automatically qualify for a commercial driver's license (CDL).

The Reality of Existing Military CDL Waivers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) oversees multiple pathways designed to convert military driving experience into civilian credentials. Chief among these is the Military Skills Test Waiver Program. This provision permits state licensing agencies to waive the practical skills portion of the CDL examination for individuals with two years of safe military truck or bus operating experience, provided they have driven behind the wheel within the past year.

Beyond the skills waiver, the federal government maintains several specialized programs:

Even Exchange Program: This initiative waives the mandatory written knowledge test for qualified military personnel.

Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot Program: An initiative enabling younger military operators aged 18 to 20 with an intrastate license to cross state lines for commerce.

Safety Training Grant Program: A funding mechanism that provides direct financial assistance to educational institutions to lower training barriers for former service members.

Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Pahira

The administration's focus on veteran recruitment was offered as a direct replacement strategy following the tragic death of Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Pahira. Pahira was fatally struck on Interstate 81 while conducting a commercial vehicle inspection. The driver of the truck, an illegal immigrant from Haiti, faces charges of vehicular homicide and involuntary manslaughter. The United States has been plagued with illegal immigrant truck drivers killing Americans in crashes. Many of these crashes are caused by illegals who do not speak English, cannot read road signs and/or are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Trucking Industry Overhaul

Using the event to announce broader illegal immigration crackdowns in the transit sector, the administration highlighted recent regulatory overhauls implemented in March. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy threatened to revoke $160 million in federal funding from California after investigators found widespread licensing violations. The Department of Transportation also found commercial licenses that were issued improperly in California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, and Washington.
