Today is Good Friday, so before you head out, make sure you know what is open and what is closed today.

Good Friday in Bell County: What’s Open and What’s Closed Today?

As Bell County observes Good Friday today, you will find a unique mix of holiday closures and business-as-usual operations. While Good Friday is a significant day for Christians, it is not a federal holiday, meaning most national services remain active while local government schedules may vary.

Local Government and Services

In Texas, Good Friday is designated as an optional holiday for state employees. Here is how that translates to Bell County today:

  • Bell County Offices: Most non-essential county offices in Belton and Killeen are closed today. This includes the Bell County Justice Center and tax offices.
  • City Offices: The cities of Temple, Belton, and Killeen typically observe Good Friday as a holiday. City Hall locations and administrative offices are closed today, though emergency services (Police and Fire) remain fully operational.
  • Trash Collection: Most municipal trash pickup schedules in Bell County remain uninterrupted, though it is always good to check your specific city’s webpage for holiday  schedules.

Schools

Bell County kids are happy to know that schools are closed today.

  • Killeen, Temple, and Belton ISDs: All major local school districts are closed today for a student and staff holiday.
  • University Life: Baylor University and UMHB are observing the holiday with no classes scheduled today.

Financial and Postal Operations

If you have errands involving money or mail, the news is mostly positive:

  • Banking: Since the Federal Reserve is open, major banks in the area like Extraco, PNC, and Wells Fargo are open but some have modified hours today.
    • Extraco Banks in Bell County will close at 12 p.m. on Good Friday. While they are open for the morning, full service will not be available in the afternoon. Customers can still use the 24/7 digital banking, mobile app, and ATMs for transactions during this time
    • First United Bank offices will be closed today (April 3)
  • Mail Delivery: The USPS is delivering mail as usual today. Post offices in Temple, Killeen, and Belton are open for regular business hours. FedEx and UPS are also running full delivery routes.
  • Stock Market: If you follow the markets, take note: the NYSE and Nasdaq are closed today, so no trading will occur until Monday.

Retail and Dining

If you’re planning a Friday fish fry or a grocery run, you’re in luck. H-E-B, Walmart, and Target are open with standard Friday hours. Most local restaurants in downtown Belton and the Temple area are also open, though some family-owned establishments may close early for religious observances.
