So if we put it to a vote right now, how would you cast your ballot?

The fight to legalize gambling in the state of Texas continues, while lawmakers on both sides of the issue continue to push their agendas.

Seems kind of strange that we can have a lottery in Texas, but not a casino.

Who Wants Legalized Gambling in Texas?

For over 10 years, State Sen. Carol Alvarado (D-Houston) has been pushing for casino gambling in Texas.

According to NBCDFW, Alvarado has been trying to get the issue on the ballot for voters to decide since 2009. She says it would generate money and jobs for the state.

Expanding gambling requires a constitutional amendment, which has to be approved by a majority of Texas voters.

Can You Gamble in Texas?

Texas has some of the strictest gambling laws in the country. Penal Code 47.01 is the statute making gambling illegal throughout the state.

The exceptions are bets on dog and horse racing. Previous efforts to legalize casino gambling in Texas have failed, however there is one casino in the state.

Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino is an Indian gaming casino under federal rather than state jurisdiction.

The casino is located on the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas reservation in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Texas Sports Betting

KTRK reports that one million Texans place illegal sports bets of over $5 billion a year.

The Sports Betting Alliance is a coalition of Texas sports teams, betting platforms, and fans.

They want to legalize and regulate sports betting because "Americans deserve the freedom and safety to enhance the experience of the sports they love," according to their website.

Although many franchise fans may be against making sports betting legal, there is a big push to change current laws in Texas.
