We had a spirited debate about tipping. First, there have been reports that some people are being asked to tip…at the SELF-CHECKOUT LINE!

Secondly, there was an article about, “Six Places You Should Never Tip”. Did you know that in MANY countries, leaving a tip for service is considered insulting?

One of our listeners called in to ask how tipping courtesy applies to legal marijuana dispensaries.  Most places have a tip jar, so if you can throw the bud-tender a fiver or even a few ones that would be great (don’t fall for the “percentage option”…you can end up tipping $60 without even realizing it).

Somebody responded to tipping at a dispensary by asking, “Would you tip your drug dealer? Then why to tip the person selling you weed?” I don’t have, nor have I ever had a drug dealer. But, I would assume people that do should ABSOLUTELY be tipping their dealer especially if your guy had to drive to meet you in a dark alley. I would think that kind of service would AT LEAST be worth 15 to 20%.

Then, someone asked if you should tip a prostitute.

Again, I would ASSUME you would definitely want to tip a sex worker. They’re definitely doing you a “service” and it’s one that is even more hands-on than cutting your hair.  I found multiple sources that say you definitely SHOULD be tipping your sex worker but there seems to be a lot of disagreement about an appropriate amount. I would guess 15-20% would be good unless, for some reason, you’re trying to impress your hooker.

Finally, someone asked about the etiquette of tipping an assassin. I was afraid to do a simple Google search on this one. I’ve heard too many stories of people becoming murder suspects based on their search history. Again, though, I would assume the standard 15 to 20% applies here. Perhaps more for EXTRA good service like taking photographic proof and NOT being an FBI informant.
