Today in Country Music History: July 15th
Big moments, emotional comebacks, and even a little drama are what make July 15th a pretty important day in country music history.
Johnny Cash's Last Performance (2003)
On this day in 2003, Johnny Cash took the stage in Hiltons, Virginia at the Carter Family Fold with his son John Carter Cash. It was just two months after the death of his wife, June Carter Cash. It was the first time that he had performed in public since June had passed away, and it would also be his last live performance. He played some of his biggest hits like "Folsom Prison Blues", "Ring of Fire", and "Understand Your Man". At that time, the audience was unaware that they would witness his final performance. Johnny would pass away later that September.
Randy Travis Shows Signs of Recovery (2013)
Ten years later, country fans were praying for Randy Travis, who had been hospitalized in Texas with a serious heart condition caused by a virus. It wasn't looking good, and there was the preliminary concern for his survival. He actually underwent emergency surgery on his brain. Thankfully, on July 15th, physicians said Randy was awake, alert, and his heart was independent once again. By the end of the month, he had been released from the hospital and was starting physical therapy.
Miranda Lambert Selfie Drama (2023)
Miranda Lambert managed to steal the headlines in 2023 after a show at her Las Vegas residency. Miranda stopped singing "Tin Man" to call out fans that were taking selfies during her performance. She told the crowd, "I'm here to sing country music, and these people are worried about selfies." The moment went viral and sparked fan debate online about whether she was wrong to do that.
From manly goodbyes to celebrity controversy, July 15 reminds us that country music is never boring.
