Fireworks Or Sparklers? Know What’s Allowed In Central Texas This July 4th

Before you load up on fireworks this 4th of July, make sure you know what you can and cannot do with them.

Knowing the Local Ordinances Before the Holiday

As the Fourth of July approaches, city officials across Central Texas are issuing firm reminders to the public regarding the strict regulations governing neighborhood celebrations. For those living within the municipal boundaries of Waco, Temple, Belton, and Killeen, don't even consider putting on your own fireworks show. It is illegal.

My Own Request

If you do not live in a city, but you do have neighbors, for the love of all that is holy, PLEASE DO NOT FIRE OFF ARTILLERY/MORTAR SHELLS!!!!!! A lot of people have cows (myself included) dogs and cats (myself included) horses, goats, sheep, etc. These animals do NOT do well with explosions...especially when they are non stop for hours on end. We also have to contend with grass fires.

Different Towns, Different Rules

Make sure you know the rules for your particular city or town. No one wants a visit from the PoPo this 4th of July weekend.

Waco

According to KWTX, Waco municipal ordinances explicitly outlaw the use of fireworks within city limits. However, local guidelines draw a clear distinction regarding smaller items; sparklers are not legally classified as fireworks under the city's definitions, meaning they can be freely bought and used by the public. If you decide to ignore the rules, you could be jailed and face fines topping out at $2,000.

Temple

The rules in Temple mirror Waco. Local authorities also want to remind you that smoking is strictly outlawed throughout all city park spaces.

Belton

Belton is a tad stricter. According to the Belton Fire Department, it is illegal to both possess and discharge fireworks within the town borders. This specific wording means that simply transporting or storing fireworks inside the city limits constitutes an infraction, even if they are never ignited.

Killeen

Killeen keeps a tight rein on city residents but does allow fireworks as part of city or corporate events. The Killeen City Council reserves the right to grant special permissions for large-scale public exhibitions within town borders or on nearby land. The public is not allowed to use standard Class C consumer fireworks. Organizers aiming to host a public show in Killeen must undergo a rigorous approval process, submitting a formal written request to the city manager at least 21 days in advance. Documentation requires a schedule, storage logistics, an official site diagram, the inventory of pyrotechnic materials, and credentials for a licensed operator.
