In Texas we take pride in everything, and it is so easy to do when we're surrounded by such awesome people like Debbi Barkley in Killeen-Temple, Texas. According to KCENTV, the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association recognized Ms. Barkley as Assistant Principal of the Year on Wednesday.

Barkley has been an educator since 1991, and served the Killeen community the entire time all while raising a family of her own.

How do you win AP of the year?

Teachers can be nominated if they have met certain requirements like being a member of TEPSA for a minimum of 2 years. All applicants must also be an active assistant principal holding a lifetime mid-management, standard mid-management, or standard principal certificate. After meeting all the necessary qualifications a form must be filled out, and then the information vetted for consideration.

How many people can win this award?

Each year an assistant principal is selected for each region. Barkley is in region 12 of 20. Last year Belton ISD AP Cindy Allman was recognized. We are very fortunate in Bell County to have so many great educators that are recognized by their peers in their field.

What happens next?

Now that Ms. Barkley has been awarded the region 12 recognition, she is eligible to apply for the National Assistant Principal of the Year for Texas. It is like getting first place among the 20 regional recipients for the year. We wish Ms. Barkley the best in being eligible for this additional recognition.
